If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, it maybe well worth getting a full thyroid check done, writes Toni Baker.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of our neck which is responsible for controlling many of our body’s metabolic processes.
Low Energy Levels
There are many reasons as to why our energy levels might be low but if you are feeling constantly tired and are experiencing many other symptoms, it may be time to get your thyroid checked.
Gut Issues
If you are feeling constantly bloated and your bowels are sluggish, it could be your thyroid that is slowing function down. On the other hand if you are experiencing constant diarrhoea you may want to rule out an overactive thyroid.
Skin/Hair Issues
Have you noticed sudden hair loss or that your skin has become very dry? With hypothyroidism you may also notice the last third of your eyebrow hair has disappeared. With hyperthyroidism the hair may become very brittle and dry and it would also be worth getting a blood test done so that your naturopath can get a good view into what could be going on.
Hormone irregularities
Our thyroid hormones are intricately connected to our adrenal and reproductive hormones. If you notice any changes in your monthly cycle or are experiencing unexplained infertility, it would certainly be worth checking your thyroid hormones.
Low Mood/Anxiety
The thyroid should always be checked when someone is experiencing low mood or anxiety. Whilst there are many reasons as to why someone may have these feelings, a full assessment should be done. We would also look at your adrenal hormones.
You may also be experiencing a whole range of other metabolic symptoms such as unexplained weight gain or loss, low body temperature and muscle aches and cramps.
